Using SSH Secure File Transfer Client to Upload Files to Your Crab Account

SSH Secure File Transfer Client is a program that allows you to connect your personal folder hosted on the crab server to your local computer. Once a connection has been established, you can easily transfer files from your local computer to your crab folder. This is very good way to backup your important files, since the contents of your crab folder are copied and archived every night by RUCS.

#1- Launch SSH by going to your "Start" tab, then click on "Programs" --> "SSH Secure Shell" --> "Secure File Transfer Client"

#2- The SSH panel is split in half - the left side shows what files are on your local computer. The right side will show, after you have connected to your folder hosted on the remote crab server, the files in your crab folder.

#3- Click on the "Quick Connect" button at the top of the left panel. In the connection popup box that appears, be sure that Host Name: is "crab.rutgers.edu" and the User Name: is your crab user name. Do not change the Port Settings and Authentication Method settings.

Once you have entered the proper Host Name and username, click on the "Connect" button next to your user name to connect your computer to your folder on the crab server.

#4- Click "OK" in the security box that appears.

#5- Enter your crab password in the box that appears and click "OK".

#6- You have now succeeded in connecting your remote folder on the crab server to your computer. The right panel now shows the contents of your crab folder.

#7- You will need to create a new folder in your crab account called "data" into which you will transfer and maintain your files. Right click anywhere on the white space in the right panel and in the box that appears select "New Folder". Name this folder "data".

#8- You have now created your "data" folder. Double left-click on this folder - this will designate the "data" folder as the destination folder for any files that you upload during this session. You will be "dropping" all of your files that you'll be sending to crab into this folder.

#9- Now you are ready to upload ("transfer") a file into your data directory. In the left panel, right click on a file you wish to upload to your data folder on crab. When you right click on the file, select "Upload" from the little box that appears.

#10- You have now successfully uploaded your file from your local computer to your data folder on crab.
